Foot & Mouth Diseaseand Your Lanark Mutual Farm Insurance Policy.April 12, 2001Foot and Mouth Disease has been making international headlines with devastating effects on the farming communities in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. We are all genuinely concerned with the possibility of spreading this disease to Canada and the impact it would have. We have therefore provided the following information to help you understand how you would be affected if your livestock became afflicted with Foot and Mouth Disease. Our Farm Insurance Policy covers named perils only. As disease is not a named peril, there would be no coverage provided under the Farm Insurance Policy for death or destruction (including government ordered slaughter) as a result of Foot and Mouth Disease. We understand however that government compensation is available for animal slaughter by government order based on the market value of the animal up to $2,500 for cattle, $800 for pigs, $600 for sheep, and $2,750 for horses. Our Livestock Mortality Policy however will cover the loss of livestock by death from natural causes, illness, disease or accident. This would include death as a result of Foot and Mouth Disease. In addition, the Livestock Mortality Policy includes coverage for death as a result of an order for such destruction by the federal or provincial government (government ordered slaughter) for cattle only. Coverage for government slaughter is not available for other classes or livestock, ie. pigs, sheep and horses. The Livestock Mortality Policy requires a Health Certificate completed by a licensed veterinarian for each animal. Also the maximum limit at any one-property risk is $250,000.00.
